No More Racial Vilification in Policing
Last month, horrific footage was released of two NSW police officers intimidating and verbally abusing two Afghan women in Western Sydney during a traffic stop.1
The independent Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) reviewing this case found that the officer used "intimidating and abusive language" and deliberately "bullied and frightened" the women – and that this behaviour was "partially motivated by and exhibited racial prejudice."2
But the year is coming to an end, and the Police Commissioner is still yet to respond to the incident.
Since this incident, a disturbing report from Charles Sturt University found 72% of people experiencing Islamophobia in Australia are Muslim women. Not long after, the country watched in horror as a viral video emerged of a pregnant 31 year old woman in hijab being punched, kicked and stepped on by a stranger in public.3,4
These terrifying attacks against our communities cannot continue - and when discrimination is enforced by the police, it only serves to further inflame hostility against our communities.
Can you sign the petition and hold the NSW Police Force accountable to our communities? We will not tolerate racial vilification.
This isn't the first time the NSW Police Force has been caught red-handed in recent years mistreating and vilifying migrant and First Nations peoples 5,6,7 and unless we take a strong stance now – it won't be the last.
If enough of us add our voice, we can keep the pressure on the NSW Police to follow the LECC recommendations, and send a clear message that we won't tolerate racial vilification in policing.

The police force should be a source of protection, not harassment. We cannot allow police officers to get away with racially motivated abuse, and have our communities targeted.
We call on NSW Police to follow the LECC recommendations and hold the police force accountable.
